Slow & Steady Wins the Race

Mom gave me a ring this afternoon and she's feeling a bit under the weather again. She's having a hard time with the pain and nausea, as always. One of the doctors on her team stopped by and said they are going to hold off on the catheter insertion until they do an ultrasound tomorrow morning. This will hopefully give an idea of how inflammed her kidney and ureters are before they do anything else.

They're not in a rush to do the procedure today because although she is in pain, her creatinine levels are normal indicating good kidney function.

Her doctor really reinforced that her recovery will consist of good days and bad days, and now that things have been complicated with the stent placement, she may have some residual pain there.

They're going to do everything in their power to rule out any serious left kidney complications, but if everything checks out okay, they may or may not insert the catheter, then send her home. I think the most important thing now will be staying ahead of her symptoms.

She's very tired though, and asked for no phone calls this afternoon or evening. What she has enjoyed though, is the few emails she's received through the hospital's web page, which get printed out and delivered to her room daily. To send her a message, go to their Email A Patient page.

This is a copy of the email card I sent to Liz this evening. I thought I'd share it with the rest of you.

My dear big sister,
You are one hard chick to follow! Yesterday I called Didi to find out how you were doing at the hospital, and learned you were back at home, but feeling all fluey and in pain everywhere. Today I texted you at home and later found out you went back in the hospital. It's hard to keep up with your saga -- like a bad soap opera :)

This email-a-patient service is pretty cool. They allow us to pick a picture to go with it. I selected this one especially for you for a number of reasons. First, I love penguins. They are cute, and endure in unbelievably difficult circumstances -- just like you. This one also looks like she's feeling a little stranded on her tiny island all alone. I'm suspecting you feel like this from time to time too. Finally, I am hoping the water in the picture will a) encourage you to drink, drink, drink to avoid more dehydration, and b) will encourage your kidney to do its job properly and pee, pee pee. You sure are demanding. First you make us wait for gas and ka, and now it's sufficient pee. Wee wee? Oui, oui?
Hang in there baby, so we can hang out together soon. Love, your biggest little sis, Claude/Coco

Hi Babette!

Well, I haven't until now chimed in yet on your wonderful Blog pages. However that has been a wonderful way to keep abreast of your daily progress (and occasional setbacks). It is difficult to hear of your painful setbacks even if we know this is part of the recovery process!! So hang in there!

I'm still planning to come to Connecticut and Vermont for the holidays and hope to see you and Pops. I may come out on Christmas, or may delay until after New Year's at Thierry and Julie's to give you a bit more time to get stronger. Anyway, know that I am thinking of you a lot!

Love from your big brother Nick in Denver
