Quick update

So far, today has been a slightly less eventful day than the past few, but eventful nonetheless. I mean we are talking about my mother here.

Dr. Donadio (who just happens to be the oncologist on call for the weekend) came in at 9 am this morning with the great news that Mom's counts are back up! Her red blood cells and white blood cells both have finally made a come back to the point where Mom is no longer neutropenic. Her platelets are still low, which may explain some bruises creeping up in weird places, so she received one more platelet transfusion this morning.

Her other symptoms are all getting under control as well. Her cold sores and thrush are going away, which means she's eating more and more of every meal she gets. She's gaining weight, she's sleeping well, and "BMing" (bowel movement-ing) normally. Unfortunately, she does get heartburn after every time she eats, but it at least is not stopping her and she considers it something she can live with. However, she does get sudden bouts of back pain that are so bad it has her in tears. We're not exactly sure why she's getting that, but it's probably due to a combination of the Neulasta shot she got last week and being in the same position in bed all the time.

They're predicting that she's going to be discharged early next week, as long as the rest of the weekend goes smoothly.

Babette !

Reading today's news on Monica's blog
it came to my mind that you are
nothing less than a fabulous Sumo fighter...

To help time to flow a little more smoothly
I send you one of the shortest poems I know By Paul Eluard :

Le sommeil a pris ton empreinte
Et la colore de tes yeux

Je t'embrasse très fort :)

Emmanuel

Liz, I'm so glad you're feeling better; especially that you are able to enjoy eating again!

Monica and Gwennie, thanks very much for keeping us posted.

Hugs to you all!

(From Paul) I'm here with Babette / Liz at St. Francis for our Saturday night dinner date. She asked me to pass on these thoughts. First, she really appreciates comments to blog entries and prefers them to emails sent to St. Francis because she will leave the hospital soon and emails will not be forwarded. Second, Emmanuel, please translate the beautiful poem to English. We have most, but not all of it. Finally, to "Seales", thanks for your comment and warm, thoughtful sentiments. Could you please let Liz know who you are?

You made my day knowing you'll be home soon.

Took Max around the 'hood to sell Popcorn for Cub Scouts, of course after checking the State Registry of Sex Offenders (don't want DCF saying I'm neglectful, you know). He's quite a salesman. I think I'm going to shoot to Obama's attention his resume to see if Max can sell anything for him (e.g., balanced budget, health care, stimulus refunds, etc). The downside to all this salesman skills is that as a 6 year old, he has started to ask about his compensation package and whether the Pay Czar has any effect on his allowance!

Love to you all there and wish I was there to hold your hand. Joy & Max XOXOXOXOX

Dearest extraordinary friend Lizzie,

I remain each day in awe of you, and your girls. I check "the blog"
each day, hungry for news, pictures, and inspiration--- and always find it in YOU. I found for Monica and Gwennie the sterling silver starfish pendant with the little pearl. I would love to bring them by in person, and if I could get a glimpse of you...that would be joy. I love Emmanuel's two line poem-- it stretched my French, a distant high school memory. I am glad that the doctor delivers some positive news, and that you are able to take some nourishment and enjoy it. The blog stories describe you to a "tee"--you take 100% of every opportunity to celebrate, to find the joy, to love, to laugh, and to lift others up. You are a gift in all our lives, dear one. I hope you can return home early this week, content in the loving presence of your beautiful home and family. Love, hugs, prayers, from Filomena ( "Filly")

Hi, Liz! (and Paul)

I'll jump in here and say that I was shocked and thrilled when I saw Stales' comment. She's someone I know through work/social media and seeing her here reminds me how very small the world is at times and how easy it is to connect when the joint cause is cancer.

www.twitter.com/stales or Alicia Staley is a 3x cancer survivor and this is her foundation - http://acs.typepad.com/kacs/the-staley-foundation.html and blog.

I hope you'll be reading this comment from HOME! xoxo

Dear Sister Babette,

I've not made a lot of noise your way but I think of you and your extraordinary circles of family and friends every day. I hope you are able to look outside and enjoy the beauty of the season as it approaches it's peak, maybe it's because of the beautiful natural setting of our childhoods that it's when I'm outside that my thoughts turn to you the most.

After a break of ten days or so, Emilie is driving Andre back to school in Worcester today. It is unfortunate that you probably cannot receive a visit from them or her but you are in their thoughts as well and Emilie will try to contact and visit Gwennie on the way back.

Love,

Peter
